Social Security Card Replacement

A social security number is very important. This number follows you your entire life. The social security number is used when you open a bank account, apply for a loan, and apply for credit cards. If you lose your social security card, you may become frantic. However, as long as you remember your social security number, then that is what matters most.

You can get a social security card replacement for free if you lost your card. You are allowed to get 3 replace cards a year and up to 10 in a lifetime. Once you get your social security card, you should keep it in a safe place. Do not carry it with you in your wallet. This is because if someone were to steal your social security card, they could use your number to illegally open credit cards or other devious acts.

In order to replace your lost social security card, you need to have the appropriate documentation to show as proof of your identity. If you are a U.S. citizen, you have to show your passport or other documents proving citizenship. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you can show your work authorization card. Other documents you need to show are driver’s license or Certificate of Naturalization if you do not have a passport. The documents must be original or copies certified by the original agency.

Once you have gathered the documents, you can fill out the application for a social security card which is the form SS-5. Since you cannot submit the application online, you have to print it out and fill it out. You can submit the application by mail or by taking it with you to a social security office. Bring along with you the documents for proof. The social security office will send these documents back to you after they have seen it and issue you a social security card replacement.
